When free water is scarce or non-existent, bees seek hydration in often steep-sided bird baths, horse troughs and swimming pools and many who do drown, or die later from the chemicals used in swimming pools. To prevent this, grate a peeled apple and place the shavings in a shallow bowl and add some water, then set it out in your garden where the bees (and butterflies and birds) can find it. The bees can safely get a drink with the added bonus of sugars from the fruit. Just remember to discard and replace every few days.
